State Not Ready To Prosecute Hichilema

The prosecution of opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema yesterday failed to take off in the case where he is charged with the defamation of President Michael Sata because the State was not prepared.

Hichilema’s lawyer Sakwiba Sikota disclosed this following a meeting with the State prosecutors held in chambers at the magistrate court.

Hichilema is represented by Sikota, Jack Mwiimbu, Noah Dindi, Milner Katolo, Martha Mushipe and Marshal Mugende.

Speaking to journalists, Sikota said the state have indicated to the lawyers that they were not ready to start the case and asked that the matter be postponed to a later date.

He said the Court informed the lawyers that it had sent the docket to the Director for Public Prosecution Mutembo Nchito for determination.

And Sikota said he was disappointed by the move.

“The state acted like they were dealing with a matter that could not wait, we had to stop everything that we were doing to accompany our client only to come here and the State fails to prosecute him,” said Sikota.

He further said Hichilema will appear in court on Tuesday next week as agreed by the court and the defence lawyers in the chambers.

Hichilema was released on Kr5, 000 bail.
