PF Happy with More By-Elections in Kapiri, Lukulu

EDGAR-LUNGUThe PF is happy for causing another two by-elections after the Supreme Court nullified MMD seats in Kapiri Mposhi and Lukulu West with home affairs minister Edgar Lungu declaring victory for the ruling party.

Lungu said the former ruling party will be crashed in the election as it was disorganised considering its records were still parading former Republican president Rupiah Banda as its leader instead of Dr Nevers Mumba.

The PF disciplinary committee chairman has taken over the role of for Registrar of Societies Clement Andeleki to destabilise the MMD and hopes to use an administrative delay caused by the government itself to frustrate its efforts in the forthcoming by-elections.

Two PF created by-elections arising from resignations will be held on February 28 while the Supreme Court also announced the nullification of the MMD’s Kapiri Mposhi Member of Parliament Lawrence Zimba and Lukulu West Member of Parliament Misheck Muthelo.

This means that electorates in the two constituencies will go to the polls before May 2, 2013, the stipulated 90 day constitutional period when a seat falls vacant.

The Kapiri and Lukulu elections were initially nullified in the High Court but the duo appealed to the Supreme Court against the judgment.

Delivering the ruling in Kapiri Mposhi, judge Gregory Phiri noted that Zimba failed to distance himself from allegations that he was distributing materials to women’s clubs, a move that meant to influence their voting decision.

MMD national secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima regretted the nullification of the two seats but respected the court’s decision.

“We respect the decision of the court. However, we regret it because it has taken away our productive members in the party. These were distinguished men who participated greatly in the House,” he said.

Mbulakulima, however, said his party was determined to defend the two seat when the by election is held.
