Zanaco, Power Search for CAF Honours Begins

Keegan-MumbaAfter the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations disappointment settles in, Zambian fans will shift their continental attention to club soccer where champions Zanaco and Power Dynamos begin their battle for glory this weekend.

An early ejection from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations eventually won by Nigeria has been a bitter pill to swallow for many die hard Zambian fans just months after their heroes brought the trophy home for the first time in history.

There was a lot more expectations from the 2013 edition but now reality is catching up and Zambians look elsewhere for consolation.

Zanaco will be on duty today against Mbabane Swallows at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka in the first leg of the CAF Champions League while Power Dynamos will play Angolan side Recreativo da Caala tomorrow at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Only Power tested continental club glory over 20 years but the Chipolopolo 2012 Africa Cup of Nations win is viewed as inspiring for the local guns to aspire for impossibilities.

Nkana, for instance, have reached the final of the Champions League only falling to JS Kabylie of Algeria while Zesco became the first team to break the jinx of first round exit when reaching the CAF Champions League group stage for the first in 2010.

Zanaco attempted to follow suit but their attempt ended in another historical feat when they became the first Zambian club to reach the last eight of the Confederations Cup in 2011.

With neigbhouring Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe assuming kingship in recent times, the belief for Zambian teams to strike more than ever is growing even stronger.

The task starts with Zanaco and Power for the 2013 calendar. Coached by Keagan Mumba, Zanaco are bolstering their team while Power have not done match to show they may be as hungry for glory.
