Opposition political parties in Zambia have jointly condemned the suspension of three Supreme and High court Judges by President Michael Sata and have called for the resignation of the Director of Public Prosecution Mutembo Nchito.
Mr. Nchito was involved as a principal shareholder in the bankrupt Zambian Airways company, which is currently facing legal proceedings with regard to the non-payment of a $2.6 million loan from the Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ). One of the judges suspended by Sata, Nigel Mutuna, had recently passed down a decision requiring Nchito and his partners to repay the loan.
During a joint media briefing in Lusaka today, the opposition argue that the suspension of the Judges is a clear infringement of the judicial process.
Alliance for Democracy and Development president Charles Milupi said the opposition will not support interference in the judiciary under the pretext of fighting corruption.
Meanwhile, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema stated that there are too many allegations against Mr. Nchito which bring disrepute to the office of the DPP which anchors the whole criminal justice system in Zambia.
Political parties that attendant the event included Heritage party, UPND, MMD, United Liberal Party, ADD and Zambia Direct Democracy.
