Civil Servant Jailed for Insult to Zambian President

Patrick Mubanga, a 38-year-old Kasama District Culture Officer, was sentenced yesterday to serve three months of hard labour in prison as the result of a defamation case brought against him by lawyers acting on behalf of the President of Zambia Michael Sata.

The court found that on 27th March Mr. Mubanga had invoked the president’s name with “hatred and ridicule” during a drinking spree.

Mr. Mubanga pleaded with the court for leniency, as it was his first offense, and as a government employee he would lose his job and benefits if convicted.  The judge however ruled against him in order to “send a message” to other citizens not to publicly criticize the president.
