Chilambwe Claims MMD Faction Shall Prevail

The suspended Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Joseph Chilambwe of the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) says the breakaway faction being led by Mafinga Member of Parliament Catherine Namugala is not wrong to establish a parallel secretariat.

Chilambwe says the MMD is no longer a democratic party as the principles on which the party was founded have been lost.

He says the Namugala faction is only trying to restore the MMD’s lost dignity as well as set the party’s priorities right.

Mr. Chilambwe has there urged people not to condemn the Namugala faction but appreciate the cause of democracy the group was championing.

He said the people who are trying to champion the cause of democracy in the former ruling party have not practiced any acts of democracy.

The suspended MMD chief said it would therefore be prudent to allow the Namugala faction to resuscitate the MMD at all costs.

MMD has split into two factions, one rallying behind Major Richard Kachingwe and Catherine Namugala who have been expelled while the other faction is under party president Nevers Mumba.

The Namugala led faction has since started forming parallel structures at the newly established secretariat along Nambala Close, off Lusaka’s Bwinjimfumu Road in Rhodespark.

The Nevers Mumba led MMD has called on the police to arrest Namugala and Major Kachingwe for impersonating as MMD officials.
