UNZASU President, Ali Tunkara, in Suicide Attempt

UNZAUNZASU president Ali Tunkara is admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for allegedly attempting to take his own life on Thursday evening.

Sources at UNZA report that Tunkara was rushed to hospital after he drunk poisonous substance in an apparent suicide attempt.

UTH public relations manager Pauline Mbangweta has confirmed that Tunkara is admitted to the High Cost wing for aspected poisoning but could not divulge more details of the ailment.

Mbangweta said Tunkara was admitted on Thursday night but medics at the country’s biggest referral hospital say he is in a stable condition.

UNZASU publicity secretary Thelma Zulu also confirmed that Tunkara was in hospital but refused to give details of his hospitalisation.

“Yes, he is in hospital but he is not here to ascertain whether what is rumoured is true. Unfortunately, we can’t comment,” she told journalists in Lusaka.

It is unclear why Tunkara attempted to take his life but he has been at the centre of controversy surrounding his suspicious dealings with the PF government while holding the office of UNZASU president.

Tunkara is reported to have been given huge sums of money by the PF government to weaken UNZASU.

Last year, unconfirmed online media reports suggested that Tunkara had severely assaulted his girlfriend from Evelyn Hone College.
