Family spokesperson Gladys Lundwe said the family had decided that Mwanawasa withdraws on medical grounds.

She said the family would not risk the health of their relative for political ends.

Evelyn is the sister of former Republican president Levy Mwanawasa and was seen as a strong contender for the Kafulafuta by-election given the legacy left by the deceased president in his home village.

Lundwe said the family was yet to inform the MMD about their decision.
