Zimbabwe has eliminated Zambia from the 2014 African Nations Championship set for South Africa after a 1-0 aggregate win at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, marking the first defeat for the home side at the new sports arena.
Zimbabwe took the lead in the 62 minute through Charles Sibanda as Zambia struggled in search of an equaliser. It proved to be the all important difference in the match watched by a small crowd compared to what numbers Chipolopolo have drawn.
The two teams started the match on equal footing after a goalless draw from the first leg last week.
By half-time, it was scoreless forcing Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard to withdraw Moses Phiri for Festus Mbewe. This was after the technical bench watched in disbelief with the number of chances Zambia had but were not yielding in goals.
Zambia made the first journey to the 2009 CHAN tournament but missed the party in Sudan in 2011 and will miss out on the 2014 edition. The tournament is designed as a junior Africa Cup of Nations designed for players in the domestic league on the continent.
