Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili turned the heat of defeat by Zimbabwe ob Chipolopolo players calling their performance in the African Nations Championship they lost 1-0 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium stupid.
Kambwili, who has often laid the state purse at the team’s disposal, let out his frustration by saying the players had not reciprocated the support from the fans who had travelled for across the country to watch them with respect.
Striker Charles Sibanda scored a lone goal as Zimbabwe trounced Zambia 1-0 in Ndola to qualify for next year’s CHAN to be held in South Africa and also hand the hosts their visit loss at 14 months old Levy Mwanawasa Stadium..
“You cannot even blame the coach, the coach was there guiding them, it is just the stupidity of the players and complacency,” he said.
“They performed well in front of a big foreign crowd, why should they fail to perform better in front of their fans? People have travelled from Lusaka, Livingstone, Kasama to come and watch them and you can’t give them this kind of results.”
The two teams drew 0-0 in the first leg tie in Harare last Sunday.
Zambia misses out on the CHAN for the second successive time after not making it to the 2011 Sudan championship. The Chipolopolo were bronze medalists at the inaugural CHAN competition in 2009.
