IT’S OFFICIAL: Edgar Lungu Sworn In As 6th President

Edgar-MpikaZambia’s sixth President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has taken oath of office at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka with the event witnessed by thousands who trooped to the arena for the ceremony.

Lungu took oath around 10:30 hours with President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Zambia’s founding leader Kenneth Kaunda, fourth President Rupiah Banda and losing MMD president Nevers Mumba making up the numbers.

Dignitaries from Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Botswana and Kenya also made it for the ceremony conducted by acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda.

Former Acting President Guy Scott handed over the instruments of power which comprise the presidential standard, the Zambian constitution and the Zambian flag signifying power had firmly transferred to the former Chawama member of parliament.

Lungu was also given his first 21-man gun salute signifying he was now the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces.
