Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has picked a last minute win in the Constitutional Court after securing an extension to the 14 day determination period by pleading with court to allow him hire a fresh team of lawyers.
Hichilema’s lawyers aborted the court process after several of their applications were dismissed with the Constitutional Court looking set to make a final ruling in the Presidential Petition at midnight.
Not to be outdone, Hichilema and his deputy Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba took matters personal and stepped up to represent themselves two hours before the midnight deadline.
About half an hour from midnight, Hichilema applied for permission to hire new lawyers forcing the court to adjourn. They have come back and ruled that the presidential petition adjourns to Monday to allow the opposition re-hire other lawyers.
