OPINION: Hichilema ‘Persecution’ Is Cruel Form Of African Politics; Hope He Picks Lessons

For the last one month, news from Zambia is predominately focused on the incarceration of opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema who faces treason charges and has remained in custody for almost one month as the offence is non-bailable.

This development has undoubtedly left a dent in the otherwise respected image of political stability the country has put up over the years.

While Hichilema action in Mongu is unacceptable, it will never amount to any form of treasonable offence before any competent court of law or society. It should have ordinarily passed as a mere distraction by an attention seeking political.

But when those with power lack the necessary attributes of discernment, they create a storm in a cup of tea. And such a storm has the potential to trigger emotions and turn the victim into an instant hero.

This is what we may experience of the Hichilema episode. The international community has watched in dismay what a joke of our justice system we have made.

In a way Hichilema was always going to land himself in trouble with the law. Hichilema had since losing elections in January 2015 endeavoured to carry himself like a man with official state power.

He has repeatedly picked fights with President Edgar Lungu and everything else that he does not agree with. He has accused President Lungu of every imaginable ill in the book, labelled the judiciary corrupt and scolded the police repeatedly as being incompetent. This is his right as a political person.

Yes, Hichilema has even turned Chainama Hotel grounds into a battle field where he has labelled everything that does not please him names. Who has he not insulted? Take the three arms of government just as a refresher to all of us; has he not called the head of legislature Patrick Matibini a PF cadre?

While we are still at it, has the judiciary not taken enough venom from him? And the big one the head of the executive who has also been on Hichilema’s verbal hit list?

Now that incident in Mongu may not have been treasonous but the recklessness with which it was executed tells just how open-ended Hichilema’s disregard for the law runs.

It was definitely cheap for the state to tuck him away for treason but definitely that single act by Hichilema and his disciples smacks of recklessness.

We do not imagine that the treason charge against Hichilema will hold but we are hoping that Hichilema will learn to practice his politics with a little more tact once this episode is over.

Like he has been advised a thousand times he should focus his energies on building a strong case for the 2021 general elections.

After all he has twice come within a whisker of victory and should therefore know better that confrontation with the law will not win him votes but cost him time to mobilize his supports base. Conversely, the PF should know playing into the Hichilema theatrics is not only costing the reputation, if at all they have any, but throwing the country into miserable standing on the global scale.

If the Patriotic Front does not care about the image of their party, they can at least care about Zambia. This Hichilema circus must end. Please release the man so he can go about his life. The punishment is enough, he has served a political sentence he should never have been subjected to. Indeed, like many have observed Zambia is bigger than any of us. Please release HH; free him from this unnecessary persecution, it is cruel, barbaric and dehumanizing. Please release the man.

Well said but even if we can call this as political we also agree that this man H H had been tolerated enough. I like this statement in your article “Hichilema had since losing elections in January 2015 endeavoured to carry himself like a man with official state power”. The problem may be able that the man lacks advisers or the man is self centred. All the same as u have said let them have mercy on him but not until the court process is over.

That’s what defines black politics: savage, looting, killing, imprisonment and persecution. Without this, then an African leader can’t be praised. It’s a continent where any despicable and horrifying activity takes place. It’s home to HIV /AIDS, poverty, crime, illiteracy, famine, destitution etc. The UN is over overwhelmed to cope with the unever ending Africa’s endemics. It’s a continent where leaders have legitimized corruption, political execution and persecution. So much resources are channeled to support a politically driven securitization charecterised by death squads and disappearance as well as imprisonment at the behest of state house. African leadership is barbaric and extremely brutal. It’s designed to silence dissent by killing, raping and mass arrests. All these activities are hailed as normal by the governed because this is the only kind of leadership they have been exposed to since they existed their mother’s vagina. Africa has produced the world’s bloody dictators never seen on this planet. The Middle East comes second. There is apparently no cure for their political decay because it’s a curse from God. They shall kill each other and steal from their own. It’s the only continent where development is only in the wallets of their leaders. So sad and Horrible!!

MMD-PF-Lungu should know Zambia is bigger than the party. PF believes in relying in uneducated people. I’m happy the persecution of HJ is not in Bemba tribes men. Kampyongo MUBISA from Chinsali and the rest are from Eastern Province. It is on record that Kambwili, Mwenya Musenge, Harry Kalaba have strong opposition to this quagmire.
I’m Bemba in 2008 I voted for Rupiah Banda, 2011 I voted for Late Sata , in 2015 I voted for Lungu and in 2021 I will vote for HH. Thanks.

PF is slowly making itself irrelevant. instead of winning more votes, its amplifying the voice of its staunch suppoertes thinking that will bring it voter fortunes. the truth is if an election is held to day, PF strongholds will have even lower voter turn out than 2016 ones and that will result in a clear loss. the reason being why should a PF supporter rise up in the morning to vote for a party that is only bent on political games rather than livelihood of the people?

  15. Kanunka

I totally disagree with this OPINION which I believe lack a detailed analysis of what transpired. Haven’t mentioned the police conduct as to why they even allowed a situation to manifest in the first place. How can HH a passenger in one of the many vehicles stop the cars for a President who was meant to use other means of transport. What were you expecting the drivers of more than lets say 30 cars to do? Please be analytical before you throw your tantrums of condemning a passenger in the many cars. What banana republic we live in now with kangaroo courts.

  16. Never mind

    HH FOR PRESIDENT.
Fellow Zambians wat we have is a country that has been built on Democratic principles guided by the rule of law. HH will one day rule this country if God wills through the provisions of the same rule of law. ECL is also leading this nation in a similar fashion. HH As a head of state and Government his life will not be his to safeguard but of those assigned with the responsibility e.g the OP. Rules will b broken lives lost and people imprisoned if possible just to safeguard HHs life as President. ECL just happens to be enjoying this clause before HH does of course that’s if he will ever do. A head of state needs to be recognized and Respected regardless of who they are its like a parent in a home. Respect to be respected, accept to b ruled so that you can someday rule. Wisdom is one thing that separates a leader from a manager.

Can anyone prove to me the observation of rule of law that Edgar lungu has respected starting from the rigging all the way to the raid of HH s family home many times has the church told lungu to have respect for human right talk sensebly People welcomed HH honourably in western province lungu is guilt of his crime .everybody knows this . .Treason issue is but a cover to prolong the petiton in the court of law .Nevertheless time is ticking lungu will be answerable to these devilly crimes he has commited God in heaven.

HH’s pomposity and stubbornness behave put him in problems with the law.In all fairness the due process of the law should be allowed to run its full course and they should be no short cuts. There is nowhere in this world where u dare the authority and expect to get away with it.HH is behaving like somebody who had a very troubled childhood because of poor upbringing.Let him face the full wrath of the law and i am sure at end of this episode he will become a law binding person who will not be as pompous and stubborn as he is today.

Granted that everyone learns lessons from life’s injustices but the greatest lesson I hope HH can learn is to never treat a fellow citizen in the inhuman manner that he has been treated. It is a lesson that when God’s time comes for him to have the privilege to provide leadership as republican head, he should be compassionate and treat others in a lawful manner as he would like to be treated. Vengeance is not any human’s it’s the Lord’s. When the time comes this PF leadership should be tried in the hague and not zambia to guarantee fairness by an international court. Donald Trump was labelled a danger to america and the world by the democrats prior to his election but has proven to be the opposite. Unemployment in the US right now is at its lowest in 10 years yet ECL is failing to deliver FISP for our farmers and jobs at mulungushi textiles factory. 500, 000 have not been delivered and the man still pledges to create another million? Had it been in africa or zambia in particular, Hillary Rodham Clinton would already have been in jail too.

  31. Man on the Tower

Don’t mind ladies and gentlemen, the issue here is they will release him on African freedom day so that he has been pardoned by President, and his name will be pressed, ( a pulizideti nibacifundo,a pulizideti nibacifundo) hold our fingers together and wait and see

  32. Chisenga

WHEN I FIRST READ THE HEADLINE OF THIS ARTICLE, I THREW IT AWAY. BUT I TEND TO AGREE WITH PETER ADAMU FOR THE FIRST TIME , IN A WAY. THE BEHAVIOUR OF HH WAS UNCALLED FOR. BUT THE WAY THE POLICE FORCE REACTED WAS ALSO UNCALLED FOR. MR HH IS NOW POLITICALLY FINISHED. HE HAS BEEN TRYING TO ATTRACT A LOT OF ATTENTION AFTER LOSING THE ELECTIONS IN 2016. HE IS LIKE AN INJURED BUFFALO. AND YOU DARE NOT APPROACH SUCH A BUFFALO CARELESSLY. HH IS LOOKING FOR SYMPATHY, HE WANTS TO THROW MUD AT ECL . HE HAS FAILED HENCE THE INCIDENCE IN MONGU. I THINK THE POLICE DID A WISE THING TO BYPASS HIS HORDE OF UNRULY THUGS WHO WERE OBSTRUCTING THE PRESIDENTIAL MOTORCADE WITHOUT CAUSING BLOOD-SHED. THEY COULD HAVE SUMMONED HIM TO POLICE, REBUKED HIM ADMONISHED HIM AND EVEN SENT HIM TO COURT WITHOUT NECESSARILY BREAKING DOWN THE DOORS TO HIS HOUSE. SMART PEOPLE DO NOT UNLEASH ALL THE VERNOM ON NONENTITIES IN THAT FASHION. THERE ARE LESSONS TO LEARN FROM BOTH CAMPS. EVEN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE FOOLISHNESS AND PROVOCATION FROM HH. THEY ARE ABLE TO SEE THE EXCESS FORCE FROM THE POLICE ALSO. THIS SINGLE, SHAMEFUL ACT BY ONE OPPOSITION LEADER SHALL NOT DESTROY OUR NATION. ZAMBIA SHALL STILL RISE UP LIKE AN EAGLE ABOVE ALL THIS. GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

    • Prince k

The problem leading to all this is the unfinished petition case. HH know for sure that he won the 2016 General elections and that pf and Ecz just manipulated the

Its so surprising to read on how naively UPND sympathisers reason,Firstly one should ask himself ,as we saw the fast and furious Mongu limulunga drift video clip,If at all Eagle ones driver had lost and the president got injured what would the people of Zambia thought or acted worse off how would PF cadre’s responded? It would have been Rwanda part 2 in Zambia, proper genocide of Tonga people,HH is slowly driving southerners FORWARD to DESTRUCTION, who is selfish between the 2 political leaders?HH is why he does not care for anybody including you Tonga’s because if he did he would have allowed your UPND MPs to be lobbying for funds to develop your constituency, but he has forbidden them to do so in Parliament, only time you would here them UPND MPs agree with PF is when it relates to allowance increment or building of ultra modern Parliament hotel, because it will benefit them directly I mean its MORE MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS while you UPND sympathisers starve them they enjoy more allowances ,,my advice to you my Fellow Zambians supporting UPND as much as its your right to belong or support a particular group but please WAKE UP AND WISEN UP.we are one people

HH is being inducted on how to run the country better than any President this country has ever had,all these things that are happening to him are just a passing phase.

The big question that We must ask ourselves is,will ECL ever leave as a free citizen after leaving office?
