OPINION: President Lungu’s Reshuffles – Hits and Misses

President Edgar Lungu has shaken up his cabinet with some radical switches announced while others have been long overdue. The motivation behind some of the changes is unclear while some of them could be read as a direct response from a public outcry.

The flamboyant Dora Siliya has been a highly controversial choice for the agriculture portfolio with majority of the chaos in the Ministry of Agriculture laid on her laps. Others have been so unkind to Siliya to even lay the poor rainfall pattern that has affected agriculture on her doorstep. In truth Siliya has tried given her misplacement in the Ministry of Agriculture and what better place to take her than the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Siliya will certainly be at home in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting given her impeccable credentials as a journalist who served ZNBC as an employee.

Given the at times clueless demeanour her predecessor Mulenga Kampamba exuded sometimes Siliya’s appointment could mark a welcome upgrade for the ministry.

It could appear Felix Mutati has run his thread having been demoted from the financial portfolio. Anything but finance for Mutati was always going to be a downgrade and given that he has served in the commerce ministry under fourth Republican President Rupiah Banda.

Not sure how much of a help the appointment of Kampamba as Fisheries minister will help the department but given that she will just be giving policy guidance there could be some positives to look out for.

There can be no skipping the switch of former Copperbelt minister Bowman Lusambo to the Lusaka. Lusambo has made friends and foes on the Copperbelt but may have stepped on too many toes to squeeze himself out of the Copperbelt that is traditionally a political landmine. The Kabushi lawmaker will be at home in Lusaka as the terrain is hugely familiar for him having honed his die hard youth antics in the region.

Margaret Mwanakatwe may be the lady to inject some life in the many financial challenges the country is undergoing and maybe more grateful to being named the second female Finance Minister after Edith Nawakwi.

As I have stated before most Zambians dont know that the Ministry of Information is a redundant portfolio in a democracy. Democracies that understand this philosophy dont have a Ministry of Information because this insinuates the government is controlling expression. The media is not supposed to be monitored by a ministry or government. It should operate freely without any control from Government or Judiciary or whomever

Felix Mutati is on his way down. The plan was made during the small funded demonstrations that did not yied any fruit. So a strategy was made. This time, was to remove from the Influencial Postion and given a none influencial one. Lungu’s eyes are wide open to hear what rhe fellow collution will do or respond. After a while and after dust has setttled, believe me you, Mutati will be finally chucked out of Government under the pretext of “National Interest.” Let us wait and see. It is Kaizer Zulu on the steering wheel.

Colleagues I know everyone has freedom of expression but definitely not to the extent of influencing other people’s options negatively. We all know that changes the president makes are purely under his/her prerogative and constitutional so why politicize?

This is a sichopet report. All ministers are the same rank and their salary is the same. Mutati hasn’t been demoted except by sensation seeking journalists Like Evans Mulenga.
The fact that Dorah was a journalist won’t make her a good minister. In journalism the journalists are always at odds with authority. Dorah will now become enemy no 1 because she will seek to make them conform to political authority. Journalists except sellouts are always seeking freedom. As for: impeccable credentials as a journalist who served ZNBC as an employee, there is no journalist with impeccable credentials in Zambia.

Due to the fact that mwanakatwe was managing director for Barclays bank Africa I tho the position suits her as she managed Barclays soo well , all in all mutati has done his part we jus hope for the best though I think there is something fishy goin on .i also think the higher education sector should have been considered these people are not working, professor luo may be qualified for the position, but quality and performance are to different entities to Me she’s not performing as expected asin education should be first priority health as well offcourse but look at it unza n cbu are still closed for close to haalf a year now thats un acceptable and something must be done as soon as possible because you wouldn’t want to provoke the anger of the majority of the population (youths ) open unza and cbu before march

Reshuffle is normal thing to expect in any government, it is a prerogative of the President of any republic to so , even you yourselves , can act the same given a chance ,Kaunda was doing Chiluba same ,each and every president exercise such powers so what . One thing you always forget vote. When you VOTE means you have given someone a term to rule according his party ‘s manifesto. Wait for another vote . The power of the ballot must be respected. Learn and accept the democratic principles just don’t condemn anyhow .CHRISTIANS we are taught to accept and respect the government in power. Yes you should criticise but construtively.
