Abolish Grade 7 Exams Or Reform Structure – Chansa

The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has insisted that grade 7 national examinations must be reformed or abolished by the Ministry of General Education.

NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa said grade 7 exams have ceased to perform diagnostic and evaluative functions as every candidate who seats for the particular exams makes it to grade 8 regardless of the marks obtained.

Chansa says the continuing with grade 7 examinations is currently a sheer waste of money and time.

“We propose that the Ministry of General Education must make G7 exams very competitive in order for the system to improve grade 8 intakes and for the nation to ultimately improve standards of Secondary Education. We strongly suggest that Cut- off points be re-introduced this year and grade 7 failures must be made to repeat the grade,” Chansa stated.

He said the move will help promote competitiveness and excellence at grade 7 level, and make the exam a truly meaningful educational process.

“On the other hand, we welcome the scheduled re-opening of the University of Zambia on 11th March. We remain very hopeful that CBU and Nkrumah Universities will follow suit. We further plead with the Ministry of Higher Education to seriously and practically deal with the many critical administrative, financial, academic and infrastructural problems currently affecting our higher education sub-sector,” Chansa added.

He said the quality of higher education in the country is now compromised due to the unending confusions in universities and colleges further adding that the country needs to invest resources in higher education in pursuing the vision 2030.

Ministry of General Education should abolish both Grade 7 and 9 examinations they are useless plus no one needs these Certificates, These are from the colonial days and the world has moved on. Why our children are being subject to this nonsense. Europe, America and most of African Countries have abolished them and they have a new system. In Zambia we don’t upgrade Education,WHY?

I second that bcoz nawdays grade 7 certificate is not an important document.
grade 9 certificate is also becoming less important. when u want to apply for a job mainly its grade 12 certificate that they require only those who wants be the security guards is only job that they require grade 9 certificate. now what is the use of having grade7&9 certificates?
    ECZ should think about this,

Every country has its own standardized type of curricular. Those ideas will actually make the Zambian education system useless meaning less and valueless. What will be pride of a student to work hard and cross over to the next grade? Some philosophical thinking isn’t update to be honest.a house is mostly and likely to be destroyed by the owner food for thought.

Do not abolish G7 and G8 exams. They serve as part of continuous assessment. They also help to check learner performance as an ongoing avtivity. Let us not be like South africa where the first exams is the metric.

Instead of abolishing grade 7 exams, in fact exams should start as early as from Grade 4! Let us avoid quantity education and adopt and embrass quality education. Education in Zambia should be dicotomised: namely vocational/skills and academic, right from Grade five.

  9. Nkonkosheni

I cant even remember were my grade 7 ad 9 certificate are coz in Zambia it has no use.

In my opinion the grade 7’s exams should be a little tougher and candidates who scores below the cut-off point should be made to repeat the grade.imagine if the grade 7s exams were abolished, then all the pupils in grade 7 will go to grade 8 just like that without writing the exams, which is worse than it is now.so,i think the exams should be tough and strict when it comes to cut-off points

Don’t abolish G7&9 but make G7 more competitive by reintroducing cut off point so that those crossing to G8 are those whom we are assured that they will make it at G9&12
Pliz ECZ look into this matter critically

  26. ernesto

but zoona grade7&9 certificates are useless

  27. sim 1

In Zambia i think education ministers they have failed to guide the education sector with de wright curriculum ,ministers jst wake up from slumber.stop wasting pipo time with stupid curriculum or rather consult from countries like UK they give u guidance. Ba g7&9.

  28. panyelekesa

it is indeed true that the grades 7 and 9 certificates have little or no value but abolishing the examinition of learners at these levels is absolutely proposterous…the remedy should rather be making these exams more competitive,if competences are to be improved in the country at such levels we need to employ measures that will make the education system worthwhile
