KCM Outsources Labour From 5 Foreign Companies

Mine Unions have been caught pants down after Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) went ahead to outsource labour without concluding disputes with the Unions.

KCM Vice President Human Capital Management Chimango Chikwanda has said KCM has outsourced about five foreign contractors and about 200 workers have already been seconded without the knowledge of Mine Unions.

She said the KCM intends to second over 1,000 miners to the outsourced contractors admissible that the disputes with the mine unions was still at large.

“We have so far seconded about 200 workers to the outsourced contractors despite all this all these workers are still under Konkola Copper Mines so there should be no fears” Ms Chikwanda said.

She said the some of the outsourced contractors have already arrived at the mines and are undertaking various mining expertise.

Ms Chikwanda named that outsourced contractors as Reliant and Minopex both of South Africa, MMS China, Scalmont of South America and CMC of Italy.

However, mine unions have expressed ignorance over the decisions taken by Konkola Copper Mines on the matter.

Mineworkers Union of Zambia Joseph Chewe said the Unions were not aware that such a move went ahead.

Is it that we , ZAMBIANS have failed to create companies that can perform all these jobs that are being outsourced to foreign companies?? IF SO, then its TIME ZCCM-IH and IDC came up with a plan to create some parastatal like it was with Mpelembe Drilling so that we can have Zambian presence in provision of mining services!!
