Inaugural Zambian Airways Flights Scheduled for Oct 24

Plans for the national airline are still firmly on course according to Minister of Transport and Communications Brian Mushimba.

Mushimba said that the inaugural Zambia airways flight will be launched as planned on 24th October, 2018 despite delays to finalize agreements by all stakeholders involved.

Providing an update on how far the process has gone Engineer Mushimba, said that the shareholder agreement was submitted to the Industrial Development Corporation for further consultation before committing to the deal with Ethiopia Airways.

He said the shareholder agreement was submitted to the industrial development corporation to study the document which was supposed to be finalized in May but the process spilled over to June, 2018.

Ethiopian Airlines agreed in January to take a 45 percent stake in the new Zambia Airways with the government of Zambia holding 55 percent shareholding.

“The Industrial Development Corporation-IDC-is supposed to sign on behalf of the government, the IDC requested that they wanted to own the document, after which the IDC Board approved the shareholder agreement but with comments and those comments needed to be addressed,” he said.

“All the other agreements that were supposed to be signed be negotiated and signed, including leasing of planes agreement, maintenance, and technical support agreements, all these agreements, that is why the process has taken longer” but we are committed to the 24th October inaugural flight for Zambia Airways,” he said.

The idea is good, but politicians are in the habit of abusing parastatal company resources that usually makes them run at a loss. TAZARA is limping possibly because of the same abuse and lack of accountability. Make it autonomous.

I agree with you. What killed Zambia Airways was abuse and none accountability. Free staff air tickets. The DC 10 plane would take off form Lusaka to London with full capacity. But only about 10% passengers will have paid. The rest was either GRZ tickets or free staff tickets. Let’s not repeat the same mistake on this new airline pls Ba BOMA.

A country like Switzerland failed to run an airline and they are far wealthier than us, well they are more economically stable. SA has gone bankrupt a few times with possible closer, it is not a joke. We don’t need this now with all this mess. Hope I am wrong though, I hope they don’t abuse the resources too. I feel an airline is just a prestigious thing to have as a country and it is intense to manage. I hope this will help the growth in Tourism with British Airways and KLM not flying into Lusaka or Zambia respectively.
