Chipata Trades Hands Students K1, 698 Fine for June Riot

Chipata Trades Training Institute has surcharged each student K1, 698 following the 11th June riot in which property worth over K216 000 was damaged at the institute.

Institute principal Miriam Mwale who was one of the six state witnesses that were called to testify in a matter where 15 students are appearing in court for riotous behaviour said after the riot all the students were suspended and those coming back are being surcharged K1, 698 before they are readmitted into college.

She said after the riot some students bolted adding that some of them had not yet reported back to school.

Mwale said some of the students will not be readmitted into college.

She said the students damaged both government and private property during the riot.

The state called six witnesses that included two police officers, a student and some members of staff at the institute.

The students rioted because they were allegedly not happy with vice- principal Christopher Zulu’s attitude of expelling students on trivial disciplinary matters among other issues.

After calling the six witnesses, the state closed its case and defence lawyer John Phiri indicated that he will file written submissions on no case to answer on Friday next week.

Magistrate Philip Mpundu adjourned the case to 31st August 2018 for ruling.

The students pleaded not guilty to one count of riotous injuring buildings

contrary to section 82 as read with section 81 Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The accused were granted K5 000 bail each in their own recognizance with two working sureties in the like sum.
