ITC Offers Cassava Processing Support to Zambia

The International Trade Centre (ITC) has pledged support of Zambians programme of enhancing production and processing of cassava crop for both local and export market.

This came to light when Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, the joint agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the World Trade Organization Arancha Gonzalez paid a courtesy call on Minister of Works and Supply Felix Mutati at the Ministry Headquarters today.

Gonzalez said her organisation is interested in helping to uplift the well fare of women involved in small scale business enterprises such as adding value to the production of cotton and cassava.

She said in similar business focus as that of Zambia on cassava, her organisation is equally working on the same adding that Zambian Breweries is one of the major partners, a move that excited Mutati who informed Gonzalez that him and colleagues from the Northern Province have adopted the crop and are working on adding value to it.

He also informed Gonzalez who was accompanied by ITC Deputy Executive Director Dorothy Tembo and ITC Advisor Nneka Henry that the cassava production one activity that when fully developed will the farmers realise the value of their effort since the buyer Zambian Breweries is interested in the product.

Mutati commended Gonzalez and the ITC for coming forward to help build the small and medium enterprises in the country adding that there are other partners who have come forward to help build the cassava which is one the main focus for the Northern Province Expo to be held in a couple of months.

She said her organisation wants to invest more in women entrepreneurs.

    The initiative must reach the rural people who need it most. Cassava is mostly found in remote areas.

    This good programme we need farmers in eastern province to be encouraged. So that they can be able to start growing this type of crop because it’s easy

    to manage this type of the crop it doesn’t need fertilizer or more water it’s drout resistant crop meaning every famer can be able to grow am encouraging my brothers and sisters in eastern province to have enterest programme it can reduce poverty in the province
