Chambishi to Retrench 30% Workforce

The uncertainty surrounding mining jobs in the country has continued with Chambishi Metals being the latest to ask about 30% of its workers to go on voluntary separation.

Mineworkers Union of Zambia General Secretary George Mumba has confirmed the latest development barely a few days after similar plans were announced by Kalumbila Mine in North Western Province and Mopani Copper Mines on the Copperbelt.

Mumba has said Chambishi has written to all the mine unions inviting them to a meeting over its plans to downsize labour through the voluntary separation system.

He however could not give further details but indicated that the union will issue a comprehensive statement after the meeting.

Chambishi metals are refiners of copper and cobalt.

Efforts to get a comment from Chambishi metals proved futile as management indicated that more details will only be availed after its meeting with mine unions.
