Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe who visited the area in the company of Road Developments Agency (RDA) and engineers from the Kitwe City Council has regretted the occurrence.
Kang’ombe who said Kapompi Bridge which was last repaired in 2004 had served its purpose and needed an emergency attention.
He stated that the extent of damage on the facility is a clear indication a new one need to be put in place urgently.
Kang’ombe was however quick to mention that AVIC International the contractor working on the 56 kilometre of roads in Kitwe who has gone on break due to rains was scheduled to design both the road and bridge.
He said the Council will look at immediate alternative measures which would only allow people to use the crossing point and not motor vehicles.
He mentioned that “immediate alternative route is passing through Chipata compound to connect to Riverside through either Kopa Street or Mukuba Road. The immediate task is to close damaged bridge for vehicles not to pass but allow pedestrians to walk across to and fro Kapompi area.
