Chipata-Mchinji Railway Restored

Zambia Railways has announced that works on the Chipata-Mchinji have been completed, three weeks after the infrastructure was damaged by heavy rains.

Zambia Railways Public Relations Manager Sombe Ng’onga said restoration works on the Malawian side are still in progress.

“Zambia Railways Limited wishes its customers and members of the general public that restoration works on Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line on the Zambian side have been completed,” Ng’onga said.

“However, restoration works on CEAR Railways in Malawi are still in progress and train movements between Chipata and the Port of Nacala will only be operationalized by mid-January, 2019, when the works are expected to be completed.”

“Zambia Railways appreciates the patience exhibited by its business clients and members of the public during the period the restoration works were being carried out on the Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line.”

On 26th December, 2018, the Chipata Mchinji Railway Line was temporarily closed following a wash away due to heavy rains on both the Zambian and Malawi sides.

Zambia Railways Limited operates the Chipata-Mchinji Railway line on a stretch of 24 kilometres from Chipata in the Eastern Province connecting with CLEAR Railways in Malawi and CDN Railways of Mozambique up to the Port of Nacala.

Heavy rains in Eastern Zambia have left a trail of infrastructural calamities in Eastern Province.
