Mopani’s “Optimisation Programme” Remains Suspended

Mines Minister Richard Musukwa says the suspension of the new procurement method at Mopani Copper Mines still stands.

Musukwa says the new procurement method called “Mopani’s contractor optimization programme” disadvantages Zambian Citizens and is contrary to the law.

He said this is because the new proposed procurement method has lapses which still need to be addressed by the Mining firm.

He said this in Lusaka when Mopani Copper Mines management called on him at his office.

“Government will not allow Mopani to disadvantage local contractors and suppliers at the expense of foreign contractors, therefore I expect that a procurement process be put in place which conforms to the law,” Musukwa said.

He said the government will not allow the setting up of contracting and supplying offices in foreign countries, including registration requirements which disadvantaged Zambian companies and propels foreign owned firms.

“I will not allow a situation where Mopani wants to push locals in the corner in their own country. The Mining giant should instead deliberately build capacity in local Zambian contractors by giving them high profile contracts,” said Musukwa.

Earlier, Mopani Copper Mines acting Chief Executive Officer John Chiwele assured the Minister that his firm will continue working with contractors and suppliers.

Speaking during the same meeting, Mine Suppliers and Contractors Association General Secretary George Jere said Mopani did not consult stakeholders before implementing the optimization programme.

Jere said no impact assessment was done and Mopani should clearly state whether they want to work with local contractors or not.

Early this month, Musukwa suspended Mopani’s contractor optimization programme pending review.

What did you expect after privatization of the mines? The government has minimal powers in the running of the mines! Interfaces by the government in the running of the mines in equivalent to intrusion of privacy! Think twice before the river runs dry! Even the Chinese that you are now accommodating will at some point beco

Ba musukwa people in chingola and chililabombwe are now unhappy with the liquidator acts . the miners are not assisted financially as per request help them to send there children to school. Surprisingly this liquidator has called back those who have retired some of them asked for early retirement voluntarily. And offered them hefty salaries which is tax free . some of them paid in dollars. What is this nonsense. This liquidator should not kill kcm employees please inform the liquidator to terminate the services of those who were recalled to offer the services that they failed to offer before they retired. This unaccepted . At the same time the same people they are frustrating those who have not yet retired. The Employees are patiently waiting what will be next but the retired are smiling. This is in fair . the a certain group of employees
at senior staff level are given salary increment of a certain finger across the

Pls Mr musukwa comment on what CK has written this is what is going on In KCM .if not taken seriously it will cost you a loosing battle in the 2021 general election . motivate or find a solution so that general pay roll can at least manage to send their children to schools without difficulties. Pls listen carefully . lob for kcm employees general payroll. If you have nowhere to get cash I suggest to ask our company give us soft loan without interest if one fails to pay before he retirement the balance can be deducted from terminal benefit. Mr Musukwa take this serious .note this if one is about to retire this is the time one needs money for higher institutions of learning and university for the children but it is the opposite because at this
stage even lending institutions refuse to give loan because they look at the age for someone remaining before retirement . pls don’t kill the old stressing with thinking . that is why even BP and stroke is very high on the aged people. They think too much. Pls I age you to look at this. This at the end will be political . miners love of and its leader for what you have worked. The face of these towns have changed and we are happy about your hard working government but at the end it will be too badto loose votes because of miners failing to send their children while they have money in zccm trust fund ,satunia Regina and what of you. Look in this angle. If this Young politician HH true has money he would have capitalised on this just to gain popularity and have more votes but even him HH. he does not look into that angle no vision of wining people. Miners are very easy to be won only if are assisted financially either by loan or not.

Please make sure you just comment and not reproduce another article. It is boring to read comments that are more than 3 sentences.

You should look beyond 2021.advising politicians to capitalize on your suffering is not only bad but inhumane,do not depend too much on contracting loans instead learn to be contented with what you have and make wise decisions.by this time of all people you should know that kcm is under liquidation so please,do not invite politicians to ride on your ignorance as miners by promising to give them a vote if they buy your advise otherwise you suffer the most.
