Kegem mine had sent its workers on forced paid leave in view of the Coronavirus outbreak committing itself to pay both basic and housing allowance.
However, the company has decided to withdraw the allowance which has also seen staff at management level with a deductible 20% from their salaries.
National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) Treasurer Saul Simujika has confirmed the development in an interview.
Simujika said Kagem mine has invoked some provisions of the law in the employment code section 48 which states that a worker on forced leave is only entitled to a basic salary.
Meanwhile, the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) said it is engaging financial institutions for possible reliefs on some of its members who acquired loans.
MUZ President Joseph Chewe said the move will help its members who are in distress amid the coronavirus pandemic.
